Climate Change Debate —
The first image is from NASA claiming that Arctic September ice extent is declining by 12.2%/decade but it’s a statistical trick. It’s like putting a linear trend on a sine wave which will show a flat line.
What about the other 11 months? Why are they exempted from the calculation? That is like having a graph of annual September rain averages and claiming that somehow represents rainfall.
The second image shows the OSI SAF values for September extent which are similiar to the NASA figure but underneath that is another graph showing ALL 12 months data .
The red trend line and red circles show the September minimum but the blue trend line and blue dots show the March maximum values.
You will see that the red minimum trend is -11.3%/decade and the blue maximum trend is -2.4%/decade and if you average these you get -6.8%/decade a far cry from NASAs 12.2%/decade.
But it can clearly be seen that all the decline happened before 2007 and if a running average trend was used instead of a linear trend, this would show the abrupt change of trend to near zero after 2007.
I have messaged NASA several times asking them why they use a deceitful linear trend and of course they never reply.
