Three Democratic Georgia State Representatives have been charged with fraudulently obtaining pandemic unemployment assistance funds, according to federal prosecutors:
• Former Rep. Karen Bennett (D-Stone Mountain) pleaded guilty in January 2026 to making false statements, obtaining about $13,940 while still employed. She resigned from office days before charges were filed.
• Rep. Sharon Henderson (D-Covington) was indicted in December 2025 on theft of government funds and false statements, allegedly collecting $17,811 by falsely claiming employment. Gov. Brian Kemp suspended her in January 2026 pending case resolution.
• Rep. Dexter Sharper (D-Valdosta) was charged in January 2026 with false statements for applying for benefits from April 2020 to May 2021 while serving in office.
These cases highlight ongoing investigations into misuse of federal COVID-19 relief programs.
