Mark 4:17 “And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.”
AFFLICTION & PERSECUTION
The test of faith is not comfort — it is cost.
In Christ’s parable, some received the Word quickly.
They rejoiced.
They believed — for a time.
But their faith had no root.
And when did that become obvious?
Not during blessing.
Not during peace.
But “when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake.”
Notice — not trouble in general.
Trouble because of the Word.
Pressure for believing it.
Opposition for obeying it.
Loss for standing on it.
That is when shallow faith is exposed.
Surface Christianity thrives where obedience is safe. But when following Christ carries social cost… legal risk… or public shame…
The rootless are “offended.”
They withdraw.
They soften truth.
They distance themselves from the very Word they once received with joy.
The issue is not suffering — it is allegiance.
Christ did not teach that persecution might come.
He taught it would reveal who was never rooted.
The question is not:
Will pressure come?
The question is: When it does, will your faith endure, or retreat?
Depth in Christ is proven when obedience is no longer approved.
