Today is celebrated by many as Liberation Day on the Pine Ridge Reservation and beyond. Liberation Day commemorates the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee by the American Indian Movement and Oglala Lakota activists. The days events are kicked off with a four direction walk into the Wounded Knee occupation site. For 71 days, they occupied the site to protest broken treaties, corruption within the tribal government, and the ongoing failure of the U.S. government to uphold its treaty obligations to Indigenous Nations. The occupation at Wounded Knee brought international attention to Indigenous sovereignty, treaty rights, and self-determination. Though met with force and resistance, it became a turning point in modern Native activism and helped spark lasting movements for justice and accountability.Liberation Day is a reminder that Indigenous people did not disappear, did not surrender their rights, and continue to stand for their nations, lands, and future generations.🪶#LiberationDay #AIM #AmericanIndianMovement #WoundedKnee #TreatyRights IndigenousSovereignty NativeResistance StillHere
