The Sorrows Of The Sinner
Psalms 32:10
“Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about.”
Let’s define a few words in this great verse of Scripture. The first is the word sorrows. It speaks of grief, pain, anguish, and affliction. And as the verse says, sorrow can come in bunches. The word wicked speaks of the one who is guilty of sin. Romans 3:19 teaches us that the law of God was given “that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God”.
Have you ever seen yourself standing before God as a guilty sinner?
Then note the word mercy. The mercy of God speaks of the goodness, and kindness, and faithfulness of God. It is settled and definite, the sinner will experience many sorrows. Sin always has consequences. The one sorrow the sinner needs to experience is Godly sorrow. 2 Corinthians 7:10 “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation…” Godly sorrow is when one is truly sorry before God that they have sinned. Godly sorrow can work repentance in the guilty heart and will the quicker lead one to trust in the LORD. Then instead of being compassed with many sorrows, he or she is compassed about with the mercy of the LORD.
Proverbs 13:15 reminds us that “the way of transgressors is hard”. I testify that I am thankful that one day I saw myself guilty before God and in need of being saved. I am even more thankful that I repented of my sin and trusted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. Lamentations 3:22-23 “It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
