RestHebrews 4:9-11“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”In the first 11 verses of Hebrews chapter 4 we find the word “rest” mentioned nine times. With the exception of verse 9 all the references to rest speak of "a laying down, or a putting down to rest." Picture a mother putting her child to bed, tucking her child in, she is putting her child to rest. God is saying that through faith we who are Christians have entered into a spiritual rest. We have put down the works and by faith totally trusting Jesus Christ to be saved. One does not do works in order to be saved nor does one do works to stay saved. All the work was done by Jesus Christ on the cross.“It is finished”, He said! Just as God rested on the seventh day, through faith Christians have entered into and can abide in the spiritual rest that God offers in Christ. Interestingly, the word rest in verse 9 is a reference to sabbath rest. This speaks of the eternal rest in heaven that is to come for all Christians; “There remaineth therefore a rest…” Rest here on earth and an eternal rest to come in Heaven! How wonderful the blessings and promises of God are to His children!!!
