"BUT ONE THING IS NEEDFUL"
"And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:39-42)
"But one thing is needful"(v.42). How difficult it is to learn this lesson from the Lord. There are hundreds of things that call for our attention each day. There are obligations to fulfill, schedules to be kept, and people to be cared for. But in the midst of the daily hubbub, whether you are a homemaker or a chief financial officer, let us not forget this: "But one thing is needful."
A promising career is not needful. The approval of others is not needful. A well-padded retirement account is not needful. Even accolades from Facebook friends and followers are not needful. One thing, and one thing alone is absolutely needful. What could possibly be that which is important in every life of every child of God?
Well, in this same chapter, the Bible tells us exactly what Martha's sister, Mary, had chosen as the most important thing of life: "And she (Martha) had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word." Yes, to sit at Jesus’ feet and hear His word is the choice that Mary chose and that should be our choice as well.
As Children of God, each of us must make time in our busy daily lives to spend time at the feet of Jesus, submitting ourselves to His will, and opening our hearts to Him in prayer. We must be willing to say NO to the countless distractions that paw at us and threaten to pull us away from Him throughout the day. We must hear and obey His Word, which He proclaimed and has preserved for us in the Bible.
Friends, like Mary, let's remember our Saviour's words, "But one thing is needful", and may that one needful thing we enjoy above all others be a blessing when we, "Sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word." (v.39)
