The Mirror Most People Avoid
“For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.” (James 1:23–24, KJV)
God’s Word is a mirror. It does not flatter.
It does not blur the truth. It shows a man exactly what he is—without apology and without adjustment.
The problem is not that people never look into this mirror. Many do. They hear preaching. They read Scripture.
They acknowledge truth. But once the reflection becomes uncomfortable, they turn away and walk on unchanged. What they saw is quickly forgotten, not because it was unclear, but because it was unwanted.
This is why self-examination is so rare. The mirror exposes sin, pride, and self-deception—things the flesh would rather keep hidden. Yet God never commands us to fix others before we face ourselves. Judgment begins with truth, and truth begins in the heart.
The gospel does not call a man to admire his reflection. It calls him to repent. And repentance starts when a man stops making excuses and starts agreeing with God about what he sees.
If the Word of God has revealed something in you—do not walk away.
Do not soften it.
Do not spiritualize it.
Obedience is the only honest response to truth.
To see yourself as God sees you may wound your pride—but it will save your soul.
