ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: JANUARY 26 1859 the Democrats Legalized Slavery in New Mexico The Democrat Governor of New Mexico Territory signed into law a bill passed by the Democrat-controlled legislature.
Known as An Act for the Protection of Property in Slaves, it legalized slavery and imposed harsh restrictions on African-Americans.Three years later, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill passed by the Republican-controlled 37th Congress which abolished slavery in New Mexico and other territories.
