"YET HE OPENED NOT HIS MOUTH"
"He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth:" (Isaiah 53:7a)
These glorious words prophesied by God's servant were fulfilled by God's Son some 700 years after they were uttered (Matthew 27:12; Mark 14:61; 15:5; Luke 23:9; John 19:9).
While our Saviour was being grilled by Herod, Luke 23:9 tells us, "Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing." After being reviled and ridiculed, scourged and smitten, Jesus now stands before Pilate wearing that crown of thorns upon His head and a purple robe around His back. With those words, "Crucify Him, Crucify Him" still ringing in our Saviour's ears, John 19:9 gives us Pilate's rebuke and our Lord's response to all this, "And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer."
Jesus could have said and done plenty that day. He could have summoned the angels of Heaven in a moment of time. With the same word He spoke in forming all things, He only had to mention but a letter of a word and the destruction of everything would have been felt right there and then that very second.
Wouldn't you agree that much grace is needed when we're mistreated by others? A holy sweetness from you and I should fill the air when unkind words are hurled in our direction. Nothing tests the validity of a Christian's character more and how they respond than when evil things are said about them.
Our natural reaction to such things is to slug it out and start swinging away from the hips. Our lips can curl with nasty and cursed insults we've heard others use. Many folks think that revenge is always the human way to get even.
Well, that's not Heaven's way, nor should it even to be considered a reaction by those that belong to Him. It's been said that "Revenge is Sweet." But the thing we forget about that is that it always leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
I ask you again, how did the Lord Jesus respond when He was being laughed at, lied about, and looked down on? Hear it once more, "...yet he opened not his mouth."
Friends, let's follow our Saviour's example as He went about doing good, when we too hear those Howling Hyenas from Hell hurling their mocking words at us, by simply doing the will of God thereby putting to silence their foolish and ignorant accusations.
