Guard the Gate
“Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.” — Proverbs 19:27 (KJV)
God never told His people to be open-minded without discernment.
He told them to be obedient, watchful, and separate.
The ear is a gate to the heart, and whatever passes through it leaves a mark. That is why Scripture warns us plainly to cease—not manage, not tolerate, not balance—but cease from hearing instruction that pulls us away from truth.
Much of what passes for wisdom today is nothing more than polished rebellion.
It sounds kind, it sounds reasonable, and it often appeals to the flesh.
But if it causes you to drift from the words of knowledge, God calls it what it is—error. Listening to corrupt counsel is not harmless. It dulls conviction, weakens resolve, and slowly reshapes a man’s thinking until sin no longer seems sinful.
The Christian life is not lived by absorbing everything and sorting it out later.
It is lived by rejecting what God has already condemned. Ears were given to hear the Word of God, not to collect the refuse of this world. When believers entertain ungodly voices, they should not be surprised when their walk grows cold and their testimony loses power.
This proverb is a call to discipline.
Shut the door on teaching that contradicts Scripture.
Walk away from voices that excuse sin.
Choose truth, even when it offends. God honors those who guard their hearing, because they show they value His Word above every other voice.
What you allow into your ears today will shape your heart tomorrow. Choose wisely.
