ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: January 25, 1810 Clarina Nichols, born in Vermont
"No truer friend of freedom can be found than she."
She edited a newspaper and wrote articles calling for laws to grant married women
control over their own property.
This social activist moved to Kansas in support of
anti-slavery settlers. There, she campaigned on behalf of the 1856
Republican presidential nominee and advocated that a statehood
convention uphold women’s rights. Her house sheltered runaway slaves.
During the Civil War, Nichols worked as a War
Department clerk. Later years, she resided in California with her
children and promoted a woman’s right to vote.
