MAKING THINGS HAPPEN A popular fundamentalist leader was known for frequently saying, "Some people MAKE things happen, some people WATCH things happen, and some people don't know WHAT'S happening." It's not surprising that this man's followers turned out to be the largest horde of empty believists that Christianity has ever seen. The adage might sound cute, but with Jesus saying, "Without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5), the serious believer understands that his duty is to focus more on what he allows CHRIST to do THROUGH him than on "making things happen" through his own self will and methodology. Unsaved salesmen are trained in marketing schools on how to "make" things happen, which is why most people have no respect for salesmen, especially the high-pressure ones who won't shut up long enough for you to think and be sure about your decision. They don't care about you being sure; they care only about the numbers. One of these "make things happen" nuts wrote in a book, "I don’t ask anybody if they want to be saved. If you want a positive answer you must ask a positive question. If you want a no answer, ask a no question. If you want a yes answer, ask a yes question. Soul winning is positive, and in soul winning you use a lot of reverse psychology . . ." Chapter and verse? Where's that great verse that says God seeks to be worshipped with reverse psychology? I saw a verse that says, "Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully . . ." (Jer. 48:10, but no reverse psychology. What ever happened to SPIRIT and TRUTH? (John 4:24) I'll tell you what happened: by the mid 1900's, fundamentalists realized that they couldn't make a comfortable living by preaching the truth, so they decided to "make things happen" by trusting smooth marketing methods instead of trusting and waiting on God. As a result, Bible preachers and teachers were replaced by religious celebrities and showmen who would make their living by teaching us all how to "make things happen" at more conferences and clinics than you can count. No, thanks. I'll keep right on LETTING things happen in God's own time as I faithfully honor his words by evangelizing sinners, edifying saints, and exalting the Saviour in SPIRIT and in TRUTH. That's GOD'S way. Any other way belongs in a worldly marketing school, not in the Lord's church. Not before the judgment seat of Christ are we going to fully know how much fake slipped through the many cracks of Laodicea, but I can assure you that the total sum is going to be massive and quite shocking. NOW is the time to practice prevention by respecting what God said about worshipping him in SPIRIT and in TRUTH (John 4:24), one of the most neglected commands in scripture. Ritual, tradition, drama and money have quenched SPIRIT and TRUTH in most churches to the point that true spiritual growth is a foreign concept. People are just going through whatever motions they have been instructed in without experiencing any real inner peace and joy due to true spiritual growth. Most preachers are just doing what they've seen other preachers do instead thinking for themselves and allowing the Spirit of Truth to work in and through them to help others. Fake and artificialism have become so dominant and normal that it's sickening, yet most don't feel sick at all, because they're accustomed to religious junk and they know nothing else. It's very sad, and I do hope the Lord returns soon.
