January = turkey vultures roosting in leafless trees.
They look ominous. They’re lifesavers.
Turkey vultures eat only dead animals.
They cannot kill live prey — their feet aren’t built for it.
Why they matter:
Remove roadkill and carcasses
Prevent spread of rabies, anthrax, botulism
Stomach acid destroys dangerous pathogens
Communal roosts look intense, but they’re temporary — usually a few weeks.
Do not disturb them:
Federally protected species
Harmless to people and pets
Providing a free sanitation service
They aren’t bad omens.
They’re nature’s cleanup crew.
