How Would You Define Success?Joshua 1:8“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”Who are people that you know that you would say they are successful?Why would you call them that?Some would say, “Because they made it.” What does that mean?They arrived at a certain status of wealth. They have a steady job, a good spouse, and obedient children. Some would say the evangelist who has circled the world, preaching unto thousands, and seeing many saved was a success. And rightfully so, but what about the pastor who stayed at one small church for 40+ years of his life and only saw a few saved?According to our verse for today, God sees success as one’s faithfulness to obey the Word of God. Verse 7 says, “Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee…” Verse 7 goes on and teaches us that if one stays on that path, then he or she will “prosper whithersoever thou goest”.To me that sounds like success.There was a rich young man who came to Jesus seeking eternal life. I would think some of his peers and family would say he was rich, he had status, thus he was successful. But Jesus said he lacked one thing. And when Jesus laid out the terms of following Him, the rich young man rejected them.Was he still successful as he walked away grieving in sorrow over his riches?Sounds to me that success is being born again and faithfully following Jesus through His Word the Bible.How would you define success?
