Thorough RepentancePsalms 51:1-4“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.”The backstory of Psalm 51 is David’s sin with Bathsheba and against her husband . He thought he had gotten by with it all but God knew and He sent the prophet Nathan to him with a telling message (2 Samuel 12). David’s heart was smitten with conviction. He realized he had sinned greatly before the LORD. He admitted God was justified in His judgment. At that moment David could have further rebelled against the LORD or he could have thoroughly repented. He chose the latter and God forgave him of his sin and restored his peace and joy. Thorough repentance will always lead to complete restoration with God. Even when God judges our sin He is seeking to bring us to Him.
