Billowing Cloud at Sunset (c. 1850) is a sketch by American artist Frederic Edwin Church that shows a peaceful evening scene over Hartford, Connecticut, US. The Sun is low enough in the sky to cast a shadow from a towering Cumulus cloud, which is known officially as a Cumulus congestus, up onto a bright orange, mid-level layer of Altostratus cloud above. Church painted this scene directly onto tan paperboard, which has added a deep duskiness to all his colours.
Notice how the spraying spread and covered the entire sky.
