. . . BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE HIM DRINK
While it's true that you can't spell "gospel" without "go," as in "go ye into all the world" (Mark 16:15), it is also true that the Bible says the sinner has a responsibility to COME:
"In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink." (John 7:37)
"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price." (Isa. 55:1)
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Mat. 11:28)
"And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely." (Rev. 22:17)
And a personal favorite of mine . . .
"All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." (John 6:37)
A man who is truly ready for salvation will COME to Jesus Christ when given the opportunity. He won't have to be pressured and "led" against his will with someone's high-pressure sales pitch. If he's under Holy Ghost conviction, then he will COME to Christ for help. That's what the Book says: "SHALL COME TO ME."
I learned a long time ago to QUESTION EVERYTHING, or, as Paul words it in I Thessalonians 5:21, "Prove all things." That being said, have you ever wondered what the Bible says about "leading" others to Christ? Well, I'll tell you: NOTHING! "Leading" this or that soul to Christ is not Bible terminology. Why not? Well, I suspect that it has something to do with the old adage, "You can lead a horse to water, BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE HIM DRINK." Stick with me on this; I haven't lost my mind. You can lead a sinner to the water of life, but you can't make him drink. That is 100% the work of the Holy Spirit (John 7:38-39).
Now, I'm not suggesting that leading souls to Christ is wrong. To the contrary, it's very right. BUT, semantically speaking, merely leading a soul TO Christ does not indicate that he RECEIVED Christ, only that he was LED to Christ, just as one might lead a horse to water. Yet, in the fanciful world of fundamentalism, leading a man to Christ has become synonymous with the sinner BELIEVING on Christ. WRONG TERMINOLOGY! Yet, it's a perfect terminology for the empty believists who are producing fake converts by the thousands! In their blind, dead, sales-pitch methodology, they have tricked themselves into using the wrong language for what they CLAIM to be doing, yet the right language for what they are REALLY doing! They are leading people TO Christ (maybe), but most of those people are not COMING to Christ with pure believing hearts, so they aren't truly believing. If numbers are as important as the empty believists claim, then fine, let's stop counting the horses LED to the water and start counting the ones that really drink.
". . . If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink." (John 7:37)
Far too much emphasis is being placed on MAN's leading ("I led five souls to Christ . . ."), while not near enough is being placed on the HOLY'S SPIRIT's leading that includes the sinner choosing to COME to Christ. You might "lead" a thousand sinners to Christ, but if they don't DRINK of the water of life, they will all end up thirsting in hell (Luke 16:24).
