Earth is not as exposed to the galaxy as it seems.
Every second, the Sun is doing something extraordinary—something most people never think about. It is releasing a continuous stream of charged particles that inflate a massive, invisible shield around our entire solar system. This structure, known as the heliosphere, stretches billions of miles beyond Pluto and quietly deflects dangerous cosmic radiation that would otherwise reach Earth.
What makes this even more astonishing is that we have touched the edge of it.
NASA’s Voyager spacecraft have crossed this boundary, sending back humanity’s first direct measurements from the frontier where our Sun’s influence finally gives way to interstellar space. Many scientists believe this cosmic shield may be one of the key reasons Earth kept its atmosphere—and why life had time to emerge and evolve.
In other words, life on Earth may exist inside a star-generated force field.
