Some people think that all contrails dissipate fast… which is completely incorrect ❌
Some contrails are short because the air the aircraft is flying through is too dry for the ice crystals to survive.
In simple terms:
• Jet exhaust always contains water vapour.
• A contrail forms when that vapour freezes into ice crystals in cold air.
• Persistence depends on humidity, not the plane.
If the relative humidity with respect to ice (RHi) is low (e.g. 20–40%):
• Ice crystals sublimate almost immediately
• The contrail forms briefly behind the engines
• Then it vanishes within seconds = short contrail
If RHi is high (100%+):
• Ice crystals survive and grow
• The contrail persists and spreads into contrail cirrus
So short contrails = dry upper air, not:
• switching sprays on/off
• fuel dumping
• different “chemicals”
Same aircraft, same engines, same exhaust.. different atmosphere.
