December 12th - on this day in 2020, Virgin Galactic carried out the VSS Unity VF-02 suborbital test flight. This was to be the company's first crewed flight to space (as defined by the United States Air Force, NASA, and the Federal Aviation Administration) of VSS Unity from Spaceport America.Carried by the Scaled Composites, LLC VMS Eve mothership, VSS Unity was released at an altitude of approx. 14 km, but due to a computer malfunction, the engine shut down immediately after ignition. The event was captured on video and photos by NASASpaceflight.com's Jack Beyer.Pilots David Mackay and Frederick Sturckow were able to land VSS Unity safely at Spaceport America.
