What Keeps One From God?PRIDEPsalms 10:4. “The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.”When pride is rooted deeply within a person’s heart, there is but one thing that can help that person. That person must come to Jesus. But how? Our verse tells us that through their pride a person will not seek after God and that God is not in all his thoughts. God knows that the person who is full of pride must be broken so that their pride might turn to humility. Humility must replace the pride in order for the person to seek God, and that God might be in his or her thoughts. We are reminded in Psalm 73:6 that pride can bind us up as a chain. Pride will hold a person in their sin. It holds a person back from doing the right thing. Pride can keep a person from repentance and reconciliation. It can hold the tongue from admitting we are wrong and saying “I am sorry, I was wrong, forgive me”. Pride likes to blame everyone for all the bad that is happening in their life. In this way pride tells you it is not your fault. Pride lurks in every person. It can be seen in the rich and the poor. It can be seen in a man living in a mansion and the man who is homeless. Pride is a tool owned by self but works in the hands of Satan. God once asked the mighty Pharaoh of Egypt a question, “How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me?” God says, “if my people… shall humble themselves…” Two different New Testament writers, James and Peter wrote, “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble”. In God’s will of life the way up is down. Which way are you headed?
