A disturbing email sent November 20, 2025, by the Nova Scotia division of the RCMP Veterans’ Association invited retired members, many living with PTSD, occupational injuries, or terminal illness, to a presentation on Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program.
The event took place November 22, 2025, at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Parish. The featured speaker was Dr. Gordon Gubitz, clinical lead of Nova Scotia Health’s MAiD program.
Canadian Armed Forces veteran and whistleblower Kelsi Sheren revealed that at least one terminally ill former officer received not only the general invitation but also a personal follow-up phone call encouraging attendance.
The anonymous veteran, who is battling cancer, stated: “I believe I was directly targeted… based on the severity of my illness.”
Sheren reports that at least 20 colleagues have been offered MAiD unprompted by caseworkers or healthcare providers in recent years.
Sheren described the initiative in stark terms: “This is a state-aligned institution normalizing death as a service to the very people they already failed to support in life.”
The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition notes that more than 90,000 Canadians have died under the MAiD program since its introduction by the Trudeau government in 2016.
Critics, including Sheren, warn that chronic underfunding of mental-health and disability services risks turning a purported right to die into subtle pressure on the vulnerable, especially veterans suffering from service-related trauma.
The RCMP Veterans’ Association has not issued a public response to the controversy.
The incident comes as Ottawa prepares to transfer contractual healthcare services for RCMP veterans to a new Crown corporation in 2026, raising fears that MAiD promotion could become more entrenched within veteran-support systems.
Veterans and advocates are calling for immediate parliamentary oversight, an independent audit of MAiD referrals within veteran populations, and stronger safeguards to prevent the program from being presented as a substitute for adequate care.
