New Pipeline? Nope!
So… What Was Really Announced With the Ottawa/Alberta MOU ….
Let’s strip away the government language and get to what actually happened. Alberta did not get a new pipeline this week. We didn’t get a route, a builder, a budget, a permit, or anything resembling a real project.
What we got was a written agreement between Alberta and Ottawa that says:
“We agree to start talking, studying, and looking into whether a pipeline to the B.C. coast might be possible someday.”
That’s the real story.
What This Written Agreement Is
It’s simply permission for both governments to:
begin research
study potential routes
talk to Indigenous communities
review market demand
and explore whether a private company might eventually want to build a pipeline
It is not a pipeline.
It is the doorway, not the hallway.
To put it in Alberta terms:
This is like someone saying they might build a fence one day…
but they haven’t bought a post, a board, a nail, or even picked up a measuring tape.
What This Written Agreement Isn’t
It is not construction.
It is not approval.
It is not a promise.
It is not a guarantee.
It is not a project with a start date or end date.
There is no company lined up, no engineering work underway, and no path cleared through B.C. or the courts.
Nothing has actually changed on the ground.
The Stakes for Alberta
Why does any of this matter?
Because without a true route to the coast, Alberta’s oil stays discounted.
We sell at lower prices, we stay tied to the United States, and we leave billions on the table.
This is why every “announcement” matters — we know what a real pipeline would mean for our economy and our future.
The Politics Behind It
This announcement is being pushed as if something major happened. But when you take away the shine, it becomes clear:
This is the start of a discussion — not a shovel in the ground.
And discussions are cheap.
So Why Announce This Now?
Because Alberta has been pushing hard.
Because Ottawa needs the West calm.
Because the federal government wants to look cooperative without committing to anything real.
And because Alberta’s frustration is becoming impossible for the rest of the country to ignore.
So yes — this can easily be seen as a stall tactic.
A way for Ottawa to say “we’re listening” without actually doing anything.
A bit of smoke and mirrors to cool Alberta down.
If you don’t fully trust the Carney government’s intentions here, you’re not alone.
The Bottom Line
Until there is:
a real company
a real route
real approval
real Indigenous consent
real money
and real construction
There is no pipeline — only paperwork.
Alberta deserves more than paperwork!
