"AGING, YET BEARING FRUIT" "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;" (Psalm 92:12-14)In verse 12 of this Psalm, the Psalmist tells us that the righteous shall flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar. There are very few of us older folks who would think of ourselves as being strong as a cedar. But it's clear that the promise does not refer to one’s physical body, because the writer goes on to explain in the next two verses that even in old age, the godly shall continue to grow and flourish living a fruitful and prosperous life.The reality for all of us is that as we grow older, we grow physically weaker. The Psalmist isn't denying that inevitable process of life, rather, he is speaking here of the health and heartiness of that matters most, which is, the prosperity of one’s soul. The fact is that one can be in the height of physical health and be wasting away on the inside. On the other hand, a person can find themselves declining in physical strength and yet be growing and thriving within.What makes the difference? Well, the cedar-like child of God is one that's planted in the House of the Lord and flourishes in His courts (v.13). And lest we forget, the Presence of God experienced in the studying of His Word is a lasting and wholesome sustenance for the soul.If you are feeling the physical effects and limitations of old age, you may have convinced yourself that you are not as useful or productive as you once were. Sure, we may not be able to run, jump, or work all day like we did years ago, but folks, I believe He still takes great delight in our lips that praise Him, our heart-felt gratitude for His care, and our submission to His will found in His Word, regardless of our physical well-being. This is fruit you and I can always bear for Him whether we're confined in a bed at the hospital, or relaxing in that recliner in our home.Yes friends, this is the Heavenly Health all of us can enjoy, even if we are wracked with human sickness, or working with Holy Spirit Strength, because His Word promises us, "They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;
