Voyager 1 is leaving the solar system on a one-way path and will become the first spacecraft so far from Earth that radio signals will take 24 hours to reach it in late 2026.
The probe is currently about 15.7 billion miles from Earth, with messages needing 23 hours, 32 minutes, and 35 seconds to arrive.
At roughly 16.1 billion miles in 2026, it will cross the one light-day threshold as it continues into interstellar space.
NASA notes that communication will soon take two days for a command and response, even though the Deep Space Network still tracks the craft.
Voyager 1 launched in 1977 and has survived extreme cold and radiation, operating until its nuclear power source expires within the following year.
