"WILL YE ALSO GO AWAY?"
"Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?" (John 6:67)
Well, here we go again. This Friday, Christmas shoppers will head for the stores and buy like Saturday doesn't exist. They'll be purchasing stuff they don't need, with money they haven't got, to impress some people they don't even like. Many will fall prey to the world's view of Christmas and GO AWAY and end up with bills where they can only afford to remit the minimum payment while the interest rate keeps climbing up higher than a runaway kite with a broken string.
Please don't misunderstand me, I absolutely love the Christmas season. I always have and I always will. I enjoy seeing the bright lights, the pretty colors, and listening to the songs expressing winter's wonderland, but my heart's longing is to ever reflect when one day my Saviour was laid in a manger.
Now, I see no evidence from the Scriptures that December 25th was the day of our Lord's birth. I don't care at this time to debate the matter. If you feel like debating it, then go and have a life-changing and edifying debate with yourself. I know what I believe. But I do believe there was indeed a day. Luke 2:11 plainly tells us, "For unto you is BORN THIS DAY in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."(caps mine)
Make no mistake about it, there WAS A DAY! Yes, there was a day when He was born as a Babe, even though He existed before that lovely scene witnessed by angels and shepherds in and around Bethlehem. There was a day when He hung on the Cross being made a curse. There was a day when He rose and came victoriously walking out of that borrowed tomb. There was a day when He ascended back to Heaven to His Father and there to intercede for you and me. And oh, Praise God, there's coming a day when that Trump will sound, the dead in Christ will rise first, and then those of us who are still breathing will rise to meet Him in the air!
No doubt major department stores will be rolling in green come December when we hear of breaking yet another RECORD in sales despite a somewhat staggering economy. But folks, here's a RECORD that will never be broken, "And this is the RECORD, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son." (1 John 5:11) (caps mine)
Friends, as another Christmas season draws nigh, "Will ye also go away", from Jesus? I trust that each of us will respond the same way Peter did in the very next verse. "Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life." (John 6:68)
