Remembering God
Psalms 77:2-3 “In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted. I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.”
How could one forget God? That almost sounds like an impossibility. I do not believe the Psalmist Asaph had totally forgotten God, but in his moment of trouble he had failed to remember God and His goodness. Asaph is in a fix. Verse 2 speaks of his day of trouble, verse 3 he remembers God and is troubled, and then in verse 4 he is so troubled he cannot speak. But then Asaph remembered God. One would think that the remembrance of God would bring comfort. Not always. When Peter was denying that he knew Jesus and was warming his hands by the enemy’s fire the cock crew and he remembered the words of Jesus. His remembrance of Jesus and His words brought heavy conviction to his heart. The Bible says he went out and wept bitterly. I would say that the remembrance of Jesus’s words troubled Peter. Both the goodness of God (Romans 2:4) and Godly sorrow (2 Corinthians 7:9, 10) can work repentance in one’s heart, but both require one’s memory being joggled to remember God.
