The Apollo Lunar Module was a lot sturdier than it appears in the famous photos of it in space or standing on the Moon's surface. The strong aluminum hull wasn't visible when the LM flew, because it was entirely covered with a thermal blanket/micrometeroid shield that controled heat transmission and protected the LM from micrometeroids. It’s this outer covering that makes the LM look like it’s made entirely from "gold foil" (actually Kapton film) and thin metal sheets.
