Your clothing might be affecting fertility — and scientists are starting to understand how.
New research suggests that polyester, one of the most common fabrics in modern clothing, may subtly influence reproductive health through both chemical exposure and electrostatic effects.
Polyester isn’t just synthetic — it’s engineered.
And those engineered materials often contain phthalates and other chemical additives known to disrupt hormonal balance. These chemicals don’t stay locked in the fabric. Over time, they can leach into the skin’s surface, interacting with the body’s natural endocrine system.
But chemicals aren’t the only concern.
Polyester is also known for generating electrostatic fields — tiny electrical charges created as the fabric rubs against the skin. Scientists believe these fields may influence biological processes, including how reproductive tissues function.
Animal studies have uncovered something striking.
In controlled experiments, dogs wearing polyester garments experienced reduced fertility. When the garments were removed, fertility returned to normal.
The fabric alone appeared to influence reproductive outcomes.
Researchers emphasize that more work is needed to understand the exact mechanisms — but the signals are strong enough to raise important questions about how our everyday materials interact with our biology.
Fun Fact:
Natural fibres like cotton and wool generate far less static electricity than polyester, which may explain their different biological effects.
This isn’t about alarm — it’s about awareness.
Our environment touches us in ways we don’t always see.
And sometimes, the smallest details in what we wear can speak loudly inside the body.
