The Pathway To HappinessJohn 13:16-17“Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.”In the first 15 verses of John chapter 13 our Lord taught the disciples about true service to one another. He illustrated His point by washing their feet. Washing feet was a menial task or a servant’s duty. The master of the house would never wash feet, but our Master, Jesus, taught us that He who was greatest among us was the one who humbly served others. When He finished His lesson and illustration He added, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” I believe our Lord just gave us the pathway in life that leads to true happiness in life. That pathway is serving others by following His example. It is doing for them things they cannot do for themselves. It is becoming a servant at heart that is displayed in action.Philippians 2:7 and 8 teaches us how Christ did not come to this world to make a reputation of Himself. Instead He took upon Himself the form of a servant. God became a servant of man by being made in the likeness of men. In that humble state He then became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:” - Philippians 2:5 Perhaps these days you find yourself very unhappy. Try thinking less about yourself and more about the needs of others and then put those thoughts into action. Humbly serve others instead of thinking you are entitled in this world to be served!
