WHY NO SALVATION IN HEBREWS 11?
One would think that the Bible's great Hall of Faith should offer us some words regarding the salvation that was enjoyed by the faithful saints of the Old Testament. After all, the chapter uses the words "faith" and "faithful" twenty-five times, so speaking of the salvation that this faith produced would seem logical. Yet, not a word. The words "salvation," "saved" and "save" are not used in the chapter at all. That's because the Old Testament wasn't about salvation. It was about SCHOOL. The Old Testament was a time when God gave his people laws to teach them the KNOWLEDGE of sin (Rom. 3:20). That's why Hebrews 11 says twice that their faith earned them a GOOD REPORT (Heb. 11:2, 39).
The law was their SCHOOLMASTER (Gal. 3:24-25), so their faithful obedience to the law earned them a good "report card" that would be signed in the blood of Christ at Calvary. THAT is when the Old Testament saints had salvation. Until then, they rested with their "report cards" in the underworld's "paradise" (Luke 23:43), waiting for the price of salvation to be paid by Christ. That's why Hebrews 11 is followed by the words "Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" (Heb. 12:2). School was over. Some passed, but the corporate nation of Israel failed, so it's BACK to school until Christ appears "the second time without sin unto salvation" (Heb. 9:28).
Just as a child is SAFE, but not saved, the Old Testament saints were SAFE, but not saved, and that's why it's foolish to argue about "Old Testament salvation." There WASN'T any.
