By Nancy Wood So what happened yesterday with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer? I’ve been critical of him, but he just played some stellar chess and I have to give him the credit he deserves. Schumer went to Senate Republicans and proposed a simple deal: Extend the ACA tax credits for one year, and Democrats will vote to end the shutdown. Easy peasy, right? Republicans get to save face and people get to have access to affordable healthcare and this shutdown—the longest one in history—ends, just in time for the holiday season. It’s a win for both sides and, most importantly, for the American people. Some 78% of us support the ACA subsidies. As if. The Republicans, still under the thumb of the Dozing Dotard, said no. Flat out no. No equivocation, no considering the offer, no lube, no nothing. Because the tired old man they elected king said so and has said he will not negotiate with the Democrats or even talk to him, because that’s the only way he thinks he can “win”. Negotiation, in his covfefe-addled brain, means weakness. So he’s ordering Republicans to destroy the country and they are gleefully doing so. Senate Majority Leader John Thune called it a “nonstarter”. But Schumer still accomplished something pretty spectacular: he proved that the shutdown is squarely on the Republicans, and just in time for utter chaos in the skies as food banks appeal for aid to feed the hungry in their communities and people wonder how they’ll pay their bills. Republicans are already under pressure to end the filibuster and this shows how short-sighted the Dozing Dotard is. Nuke it, as he’s demanding, and then they lose that tool when the Democrats are in charge. So of course the Republicans are reluctant to do as he’s demanded. The badministration said today they’d fund SNAP in full, but they are also appealing a federal judge’s ruling that said they had to do so. No one can explain to me why they are so adamant about refusing to pay out SNAP benefits, when the money is there for them to do so. Plus there’s that memo to grocery stores ordering them not to offer any sort of discount for customers who use SNAP benefits. Just utter, breathtaking cruelty with no point, no end game, no justification. They’re cruel because they can be, and they will never be held accountable. They learned nothing from Tuesday's election results. But let people get hungry and, well, when you ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose. Do you feel lucky, punk? Note: I added photo
