25 years ago today, the Expedition 1 crew arrived at the International Space Station — and it’s been continuously inhabited ever since. For a quarter century, the ISS has served as a home in orbit for astronauts from around the world and a unique platform for science, discovery, and commercial innovation.
The ISS has also helped transform the U.S. launch industry. Its role as a destination enabled the development of commercial cargo and crew missions, paving the way for companies like SpaceX and others now shaping the space economy.
In microgravity, researchers are exploring frontiers impossible to study on Earth — from ultra-cold quantum physics in the Cold Atom Lab, to bioprinted human tissue, to advanced optical fibers like ZBLAN that could improve communications and medical imaging. These experiments are helping us better understand diseases, develop new treatments, and prepare for future long-duration missions.
The ISS partnership — led by the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada — remains one of the most enduring examples of peaceful international cooperation in space.
Here’s to everyone who has called the ISS home — and to the discoveries and adventures still ahead.
