I think these turned out pretty π I saw a tiny dot from far away so of course had to go look. ~Bordered plant bug, likely a Largus californicus. It is a true bug (order Hemiptera) with sucking mouthparts, meaning it drinks fluids from plants. Adults are black with a distinctive orange or red border on the edges of their wings and thorax. While they are generalist feeders on plants, they are not typically considered pests and can also feed on dead insects and carrion. The greatest diversity of this genus is found in the southwestern United States.
