The Things That Are In The World 1 John 2:15-17“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”Through the years I have heard much preaching on the enemy of the Christian that we call the world, but I do not remember ever hearing a sermon on “the things that are in the world”. The world itself is a great enemy, but our text indicates that “the things that are in the world” can easily draw us away from God’s will for our life. I am not going to get into naming what I think some of “the things of the world” are, for I believe they are many. Some of those things might not be a threat to us at all, while others could be detrimental to our faith and fulfilling the will of God for our life. We need to take this as a warning that love for “the things that are in the world” does not supersede our love for God and fulfilling His will for our life. God only gifts us with one life, to waste it chasing and working for the things of this world would be sad. Be careful that the lust of your flesh and the lust of your eyes, and the pride of your life do not draw you into being overcome by “the things that are in this world”. One day our life as we know it will end and what abides after we are gone will only be what we have done for Jesus Christ.
