Christ All in All, or Nothing at All
O soul, beware the peril of a divided trust! To lean partly upon Christ’s righteousness and partly upon thine own is to build thy hope upon a foundation both firm and false—a rock and a quicksand. What concord hath Christ with Belial? Shall the Lamb of God share His glory with the filthy rags of man’s righteousness? Nay, it cannot be. If Christ be thy righteousness, He must be thy whole righteousness, or He is none at all unto thee.Consider, then, the folly of mingling grace with works, as though the blood of the covenant needed thy poor additions. This is to dishonor the sufficiency of the Mediator and to tread underfoot the freeness of the gospel. The righteousness of Christ is a perfect robe, seamless and entire; to patch it with thy own doings is to rend it.Therefore, rest thy whole weight upon Him. Let thy feet stand firm upon the Rock of Ages, and not stagger between two opinions. For he that would be justified must be found in Christ, not having his own righteousness, but that which is through faith. So shall thy peace be sure, thy hope steadfast, and thy salvation gloriously secure.
