Critics say the ruling is an example of liberal judges imposing 'soft on crime' sentences that allow criminals to run rampant in the city.
The attack happened back in August when Coristine, a 19-year-old software engineer and Elon Musk protégé, protected his girlfriend from a mob of about 10 teens who tried to carjack them in DC.
Coristine pushed his girlfriend into the car to keep her safe, before being attacked by the group—leaving him with a broken nose, a concussion, and blood streaming down his face.

Despite the violent nature of the crime Judge Briggs— confirmed in 2022—opted against jail time declaring that her role is to "rehabilitate, not punish."
She said she hoped that the teens would "learn from their probationary period.
