An unprecedented event in decades has been recorded in Antarctica: the continent's ice sheet gained more than 100 billion tons in just one year, temporarily reversing its continuous melting trajectory. The finding surprised scientists who monitor the impact of climate change on polar regions. The increase, considered significant, may be linked to unusually intense precipitation, as well as atmospheric changes that favored the formation and retention of snow. It is also possible that colder ocean currents contributed to the ice mass gain. Studies, however, are still ongoing to clarify the exact causes.Despite the momentary good news, researchers emphasize that this episode does not mean a definitive reversal. Antarctica, despite occasional gains, has continued to lose large volumes of ice over the past few decades, posing a continued risk of sea level rise.

The Antarctic plateau elevation is at 9,000+ feet and it is a cold desert (-90C) that historically got less than 6 inches of water equivalent as snow per year. With the surrounding ocean covered with sea ice there was little moisture to blow inland and make snow.
With the sea ice disappearing and ... View More
