๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑโ›ด THROWBACK: Israel's dark plan to provoke Middle East war by attacking US ship
On June 8 1967, five Israeli jets and three torpedo boats attacked the US Navy spy ship USS Liberty north of the Sinai Peninsula. 34 crew members were killed and 173 were injured.
Here are the details:
๐Ÿ”ถ The sustained attack happened during the Six-Day War between Israel and Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq. Israel has long claimed it mistook the US ship for an Egyptian one.
๐Ÿ”ถ But former US Secretary of State Dean Rusk said the attack was not an error. "Through diplomatic channels we refused to accept their explanations," Rusk wrote in 1991 in his book As I Saw It. "I didn't believe them then, and I don't believe them to this day."
๐Ÿ”ถ The attackโ€™s survivors support Ruskโ€™s stance. Liberty crewman David Lewis said Israeli pilots must have known it was a US ship as it was flying the flag. "No trained individual could be that inept," he said in an interview.
๐Ÿš—๐Ÿค” Cover-up to provoke war?
๐ŸŸฅ It was "one of the classic all-American cover-ups," said Thomas Moorer, a former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman after investigating the attack as part of an independent panel for a year.
๐ŸŸฅ The strike was a plot to "fake an Egyptian attack" and force the US into war with Egypt, a 2007 BBC investigation said. The plan was to sink the ship and use it as a pretext to send nuclear-armed aircraft to bomb Egypt. But When the Liberty survived, the planes โ€” already on stand-by โ€” were recalled.
๐ŸŸฅ After the attack US president Lyndon Johnson and defense secretary Robert McNamara forced the inquiry to rule it an accident, former US Navy attorney Ward Bolston said, adding that Johnson may have been wary of angering Jewish voters
