Comey told New York magazine in an article published October 10, 2003, that he had been a Communist in his youth: “In college, I was left of center, and through a gradual process I found myself more comfortable with a lot of the ideas and approaches the Republicans were using.” He acknowledged that he had voted for Democrat presidential candidate Jimmy Carter in 1980, but that in 1984 “I voted for [Republican Ronald] Reagan — I’d moved from Communist to whatever I am now.
