Judging Success
Luke 12:15
“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
Even Christians get caught up in thinking that success is measured by wealth and possessions. But here in this verse Jesus teaches otherwise. Jesus made this statement in regard to a request. Luke 12:13 “And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.”
The sin of covetousness can chain a person as tight as any addiction. While there is nothing sinfully wrong about being rich, the sin may come in what it means to an individual to be rich or how the wealth is acquired.
What is true wealth?
Is it just having lots of money and material things? Can a person who is poor in money and possessions still be wealthy? What about spiritual wealth? Isn’t life more than meat, and the body more than raiment (Luke 12:23)? Can’t a person have their treasure in heaven instead of here on earth? I have known people who were labeled poor by the standard of the IRS. But these same people have great spiritual wealth. And for the record I have met people who were very wealthy monetarily speaking and were also spiritually wealthy. I believe the principle of truth that Jesus was teaching in Luke 12 was this- Success is not measured by what we see externally but on what one holds in his or her heart about God and wealth.
