So Long, Yet Shew UsJohn 14:8-9“Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?”I was recently thinking of how many sermons I have heard in my lifetime. I thought about the fact that I have been in church my entire life. I thought how I was privileged to be brought to church by my parents since the day I was born. For the record, my thoughts had NO complaints attached with them. But I admit that there was conviction with my thoughts. How could I, one who has heard so many sermons, yet still doubt God? This was the case with Philip. His reply to Jesus’s statements in John 14:1-7 was, “Shew us the Father”. Philip needed to see… Jesus answered, “Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip?” I thought, in light of growing up in church, hearing countless Sunday School lessons and sermons and yet in reality at times I still doubt Him. I also found in my thoughts that day, that God’s grace is so wonderful! In and through His grace, God is so patient with His followers. Jesus went on to tell Philip that he could do greater works than he had seen Christ do, if he would believe on Jesus. Isn’t it wonderful that through His grace, God is greater than all our doubts and failures.
