Tyrannosaurus fluctus? Stratocumulus rex? Mick Garrett (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 64,911) spotted what looked like a parade of cloudy dinosaurs roaming the troposphere over Mount Eliza, Victoria, Australia.
The hunched bodies of the marching reptiles were sculpted by wind shear, which is usually when the air above the clouds flows much faster than that below (or, occasionally, when they flow in very different directions). The shearing effect between the airflows leads to repeating waves that can curl over at their tops. The formation of low clouds would be known as Cumulus fluctus – or, if you prefer, as cloud dinosaurs.
