If Thou, Then Shalt ThouProverbs 2:1-5“My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.”Three times in this text we read “If thou…” and once we read “So that thou…”God in His Word is pointing out our responsibility. God gives us a promise butthe promise is based on our obedience to some conditions.God is saying, “If thou…” do your part;“Then shalt thou…” receive the promise. In the first four verses of Proverbs chapter 2 the conditions are to receive God’s words, hide His commandments, incline thine ear to wisdom, apply thine heart to understanding, cry after knowledge, lift up our voice for understanding, and to seek wisdom as you would seek gold and hidden treasures. When that happens God says the promise comes that you will better understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. This tells me that there are truths and promises in the Christian life awaiting each of us, but we must do our apart to lay claim to what they hold for us as Christians.
