Fair-weather clouds sometimes pretend to be menacing. Kees Neve ( Cloud Appreciation Society Member 57,271) looked up while on a bike ride to the Eifel mountain range in Ardennes, Belgium and saw this set of shark teeth looming above him. Or were they the claws of an enormous bear? But these Altocumulus undulatus clouds were nothing to be concerned about. The ridges were caused by vertical wind shear – a distinct change in wind velocity just below and above the cloud layer, which can result in a rising and dipping of the airflow. The resulting cloud ridges were sharpened into points by the wind’s velocity also varying greatly at one end compared to the other – a pattern known as horizontal wind shear.Whether the teeth of a sky shark or the talons of a celestial bear, these clouds were no menace to Kees. He could enjoy the menacing spectacle from the safety of his bicycle in the calm air many miles below.
