Helping Yourself And Others1 Timothy 4:15-16“Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.”In the first and second letters to Timothy the Apostle Paul had much to say to the young pastor Timothy. His advice and admonition here was for Timothy to first take care of himself spiritually before he tried to help others. Things like meditation (there’s a lost art), dedication, observation, and faithfulness to doctrine and things you have learned must be applied in your own heart and life if you expect to help others. Your own personal spiritual growth will be a profit to others. The principle of learning from God so that you might better teach others is taught all throughout Scripture. In Deuteronomy chapter 6 God gives instructions to fathers about teaching their children and grandchildren about Him. God makes it plain that the truths about Him must first be in thine own heart if you are going to be able to rightfully teach it unto your own children. Helping others spiritually begins with me learning myself. To me this is why a daily devotional time between the individual and God is so important. I can never truly help others if I am not first walking with God myself. Taking heed unto your own personal growth in the Lord helps save or deliver you and those that will hear you.
