SINNER'S PRAYER: ABUSE AND CONFUSION
Preachers really need to be more careful when giving titles to their sermons. I listened to a preacher who was supposedly going to preach against the "sinner's prayer" when, in reality, he spent most of his sermon speaking against the ABUSES of such prayers and against empty believism. I agree with most of what the man said, but he didn't actually say what the sermon title implied.
It's kinda hard to go against the idea of a convicted sinner expressing his faith in Christ in the words of a simple prayer when you consider verses like Luke 18:13, Luke 23:42 and Romans 10:13. The problem is not so much the idea of a salvation prayer, but rather the ABUSE that is being done by far too many brethren by pushing EMPTY prayers on non-convicted sinners. Too many "soul winners" lack spiritual discernment and cannot (or at least DO not) discern when a man is or is not under Holy Ghost conviction. Chalking up another "convert" has become more important than ensuring that he REALLY IS a convert. The problem is more often the pusher rather than the prayer. That's why I preach and write against empty-believe "soul winning" and not against sinners praying.
