Harry Aldrich (Cloud Appreciation Society member 64,956) spotted outspread dragon wings soaring in the clouds over the Santa Rosa Mountains, east of Los Angeles, US.The distinctive arched features here were sculpted in the Altocumulus clouds by strong winds tumbling and churning in turbulent flows in the lee of the mountain peaks. Clouds like these have caught the eyes of cloudspotters worldwide, who have likened them not to dragon wings but to eyebrows. In fact, the informal Latin name for them is supercilium, which means ‘eyebrow’. It isn’t an official name (yet), but we’ll just raise our eyebrows and classify them as Altocumulus supercilium anyway.
