It Is Written
Matthew 4:4, 7, 10
“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God… Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God…. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”
In Matthew chapter 4 we have record of Jesus being “tempted of the devil”.
The word “tempted” means to try whether a thing can be done, to make a test of. We read how Satan tempted Jesus. It seems to me that Satan wanted to see if he could get Jesus to go against or disobey or deny the Father. Three different times we find Jesus saying to Satan, “it is written”. Oh, how important it is for us to be familiar with what is written in the Bible! During the temptation, Satan even used scripture himself, against Christ. But Jesus rightly divided the Scripture to once again defeat Satan’s temptation. We must not only know what the Bible says but we need to know how to rightly use it. What we read here about Jesus overcoming the temptation of Satan wasn’t just to show us His power over Satan, but to show us how to overcome the temptations of Satan ourselves. We can only overcome Satan through the Word of God, knowing what it says and how to use it.
2 Timothy 2:15
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
